Came along this news on National Geo website saying "Bizarre" Octopuses Carry Coconuts as Instant Shelters"
The video showed the octopus carrying the coconut shell 'walking' around the seabed. What is so special about coconut shell that the octopus chooses it as a shelter? Another camouflaging tools..? The octopus looks really cute in the video.

I know my blog is abit dead. Probably I didn't update for more than a month. The reason being is I don't know how to start. I wanted to blog something about the whole Cambodia trip. But it just has too many things to blog about it. And now, the freshman orientation camp is over, I should sit down one day and think about how to start writing about it... LOL.

Project Semakau: 4th Trip - Transect Studies
Today woke up very early in the morning and took a cab down to Marina South Pier. Along the way, I kept seeing lightnings brightening up the sky. And I know was a bad bad sign. It rained when we were on the ferry to Pulau Semakau. Kindly, the rain stopped when we arrived. However there were still thick dark cummulonimbus clouds around.
I guess the South-west monsoon was doing the job, helping us to blow away the clouds. This give us a lot of hope that the weather would be good today. There's no bus today to bring us to the intertidal site. So we had to walk quite long distance. Lucky the weather is cooling. I enjoyed it very much as I could look out for more things.
Finally the real job had to get started. It was my first time doing transect survey and I'm posted to do the seagrass transect... which I don't really like because I don't know how to differentiate between seagrass. Haha. Thanks to Samuel and Crystal who guided me along. We completed our transect quite fast as our region was quite bare. I'm glad that I had gained quite a knowledge on seagrass after the transect survey. I didn't take photos on seagrass today probably the next time then I will do it. Let's see my 'harvest' today...

Discover Leonardo Da Vinci
I know he is a great person. Probably the Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, has brought more attention to him. The painting of Last Supper or Mona Lisa has always been controversy about it among different groups of people. Painting that can create so much of discussion is definitely a must-see. So now, the chance is here for all Singaporeans. The Da Vinci - The Genius Exhibition is here in Singapore.
I used to be confused whether is he a scientist or an artist. After been through the exhibition, I'm impressed by this person. He is both a scientist and artist. But not only that, he is also a inventor, engineer, sculptor, anatomist, biologist, musician, architect, philosopher..! I used to think that scientist and artist cannot co-exist in a person. Haha.
One of the stuffs that amazed me is probably the anatomy of the human body. I have no idea how he managed to draw out the details of the bones and organs of a human body, especially during the 15th century. Indeed, I have learnt more about the Last Supper, Mona Lisa and also the Vitruvian Man. If I ever have the chance to go to Europe, I will like to look at the real paintings at the museum.
One disappointing issue is that we are not allow to take any photos in the exhibition. Anyway, this exhibition will be here until August. So take the chance to see it.

I like this quote and I'm still trying:

Experience as Car Washer
After 2 consecutive days of car washing... I'm slag..! I had washed about over 100 of cars this weekend. Honda, Toyota, BMW, Mercs, Prosche and even minibus! The funny thing was, i don't get to wash any Jaguars. I have gotten to experience what the life of being a car washer in petrol kiosk. And most importantly, I learned how to wash a car properly. It really gave us satisfaction when the cars came in dirty and leave the station with shine. Once again, we have to thank all the friends who came down and helped out due to shortage of manpower. We also like to thank the Shell staffs for teaching us and helping us out. Lastly, I like to thank all my friends and also generious drivers who came down to support and let us wash their precious car. LOL Car Wash Fund Raising successful!

Project Semakau: my 3rd trip to Semakau.
This time was slightly different from my past two trips to Semakau. I had to wake up early morning to catch the morning tide. Today, we reached the intertidal area of Semakau around 9am. The sun was shining bright. Roy and I were grouped together and began our hunt for interesting creatures. We started from the mangrove area and saw a lot of shells... Shells shells shells... I don't like to see so many shells because I'm not really good at identifying them.
Just 30mins of our 'hunting', strong wind followed by rain and lightnings prevent us from continuing any further due to safety issue. It was quite a disappointment for everyone that woke up early morning and hope to 'harvest' something back. So well... today roy and I 'harvested' only shells and crabs... so sad..! we didn't even make it to the seagrass area.
So well, today harvest... ( forgive me if i state the species wrongly)

I don't know what this called but it looks like the shells we eat at seafood center.
This big crab is hiding inside the mangrove tree. I can't really see the dorsal part of the crab...so well...identity unknown to me. haha. (edited: Spotted Belly Crab)

Experience being a flyer distributor
Probably this is the first time I went door to door to distribute flyers (because of the stupid closed letterbox). As part of the fund raising programme for Project LOL, we were doing newspaper collection in some neighbourhoods. Flyer distribution was to bring up their awareness about our event.
Along the way giving out flyers, I discovered some of things.
Some flats really do have weird designs. (which made us go up and down)
Some dog owners keep really big dogs at home... isn't it illegal for those staying in HDB?
Small dogs do bark louder than big dogs and more fierce.
Painted doors by the loan shark.
CCTV outside their flat.
Afterall... giving out flyers is not really fun. haha.

Life: Hunger and Poverty
Three examination paper done. Three more to go...
This shall be a little exam break.
Enjoy the short film that I found on my friend's fb.
It's quite meaningful.
It doesn't mean to encourage wastage of food. It's just the another side of the world that is not seen.
Enjoy.

Discover the voices...
Sad to hear, a good singer just passed away.
Her name is 阿桑。 Her songs are touching and sad. I believe some of you may have heard of her songs. "叶子" probably the song that made her gained her first popularity.
She died of breast cancer yesterday. Age 34. A young age.
Below is the news report of her.
Try listen to this "Angel" version sung by her... I personally like this version.
Angel - Ah Sung
Treasure your life. Explore and Experience your life. Life is short.
Rest in Peace.

Discover about Short Film
While I'm surfing a forum when i came across this thread recommending about this short film. After watching it, I found it quite interesting and like to share with you guys.
I'm not a film critic. But in my point of view, I feel that it shows us that sometimes we walk around aimlessly. There's no motivation in life until you find a goal or something that you look forward to everyday. Perhaps LovE. There's where the attitude changes.
Interestingly, there is no verbal communication between the pair. They just communicate over a street using paper and marker.
"SIGNS", the title of this video, shows that all we need is a sign to know where to look for. A sign for the guy to find his love which is at the opposite building.
I think I'm slowly fond of short film...
This film is actually part of a promotion of Schweppes.

LifE: YES I'm becoming more STRESS soon...
I happen to come across this news on the yahoo.com.sg. And I say, "wow... this is something I need it now". So now let's me share with everyone who miss this topic on the yahoo.
- Be a better breather. "When you make a conscious effort to breathe deeper, it naturally brings your body back to a more relaxed state," explains Frederic Luskin, Ph.D., author of Stress Free for Good. Place your hand on your stomach and watch it rise as you inhale for a count of 3 or 4; hold your breath for the same count, and then exhale for as long as comfortable and watch your belly fall. - I personally believe this work. Do it slowly and a few times. It will calm u down. ;)
- Look forward to something. Each morning, think about one little, enjoyable thing you plan to do that day (the crossword puzzle) and one bigger pleasure on the horizon (your trip to the mountains). This ritual trains your brain to focus away from what can go wrong that day. -It's like a rewarding system. Let's try..! Tml i shall finish running/walking the 6km! Exercise definately release my stress.
- Make a small change to your routine. "If you cultivate even a little bit of surprise in your life, it helps keep your cognitive responses flexible and helps you handle whatever life throws your way." Take a new cardio class or pick a cuisine you've never tried. - I totally like this idea. Doing something new everyday. Exploring something new. Cause you'll never know what is awaiting for you. ;)
- Convert Monday into Funday. The flip side to TGIF is OMGIM: Oh, my God, it's Monday! In fact, more heart attacks occur on Mondays than on any other day. Schedule a weekly lunch with a friend or take a class you love on Mondays so you'll look forward to the start of the week, Dr. Wheeler advises. - This is like a change in mentality. I like it too...but it's hard to change sometimes. No wonder I like to go town during weekdays. Haha.
- Come home 15 minutes late. After work, walk home or listen to music at a pretty scenic spot before you burst through your front door. "Don't look at it as a waste of time," Dr. Wheeler says. "It's an important way of decompressing and transitioning back to home life." - Hmm... I like to go back straight to home. There isn't much scenary around my neighbourhood, except in my house.
References: http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/5-instant-soothers-for-high-stress-times-383709/
The rest will be my opinion...wahaha. - Use aroma. I believe some scent will calm people down and make you more relax. I think i haven't used it for a long time...
- Play Soft Music. I like to do this a lot. Especially piano pieces make me feel peace. haha.
- Catch some beautiful scenaries. Like Sunset, sunrise, beaches, or even the night skyline. If i happen to be at the beach during a beautiful sunset or the night under the thousand stars, my mood will be superb high. It makes your mind wider up a lot. I love the sun, the sand and the sea. I'm dying to go to the beach...
- Do your favourite hobbies like exercising and ktving!. Doing your favourite stuffs make you happy. Exercise definitely can relieve stress..! It makes you tired and easier to fall asleep at night. Therefore you will have better rest.

Life: Ways to relieve STRESS.
Fun ways to let loose (and stop stress!)

- PaRtY! : Don't worry, be silly. People who make time for close pals tend to have lower levels of cortisol and other stress hormones. (Yeah! I did it last wk at Kf's bday!)
- Primp! : Psychologists say looking good gives you a sense of control. (OkaY, I will try to do it everyday!)
- Dance! : Moving in relation to one another fosters empathy, which lowers anxiety, report dance therapists. Boogie with a buddy. ( Hmm...i didn't do it for a long time. Perhap i should start learning dancing! Or can someone bring me to clubbing..?! LOL)
- Drink! : Knocking one back can blow off steam and act as a mild sedative. So toast but don't get toasted: Chronic drinking can increase anxiety. (Yeah, having chronic drinking during Kf's bday and Liverpool vs Man U match last wk. Ha..!)
- Indulge! : Fatty, sugary treats quell stress hormones, a study from the University of California at San Francisco finds. Nosh on a bit of naughty food sans guilt. (YesH, I had 'topless five' at swensen's! Everyone, let's go again!)
So afterall, I had a de-stressing last week. I think I need it more for the coming weeks... Really... ;)

Discover the NEW fishes
Recently, there are discovery from under the sea.
A new "psychedelic" fish is discovered. Look at the video from the link..! It's cute! The white-yellow strip bands on the face can let the creature camouflage well among the corals. I think it looks like a lion, though it is not a lion fish yet related to frogfish. It has fins (Feet-lookalike structure) that can hold on to its position.
Check it out:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/02/090226-psychedelic-fish-picture-ap.html
Another discovery is this weird Fish With Transparent Head. It's a Pacific barreleye fish. It is just so awesome..! Transparent head?! It's eyes are inside the transparent dome. And it was filmed alive. Most of the creature living deep under the ocean have very special features. Maybe it is to adapt to the dark cool environment they are in.
Look at the video:
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/02/photogalleries/fish-transparent-head-barreleye-picture/index.html
Deep in the ocean, there are a lot more creatures for us to discover. Human are just too small on this world. I hope to go on another diving trip soon but doubt so for this year.

Discover about Facebook related to Cancer
I was listening to radio when the DJ was discussing about this topic that Facebook may increase the risk of cancer.
Out of curiosity, i searched the net and found a few websites related to this topic.
http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2009/02/oh-no-facebook-causes-cancer.html
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1149207/How-using-Facebook-raise-risk-cancer.html
Ya, i'm frequently on fb recently... maybe i should visit it less.
However, I believe social websites like facebook and friendster have indeed help us to keep in touch with a lot friends and also help us to get back some of our long lost friends. It is also a way to let us know how our friends are doing recently.
One thing it highlighted is lack of face to face interactions. People spend more time on computer while spend less time with people around. People are getting more attached to computer like how they are attached to their handphone. That's how the advancement in technology has change people's life. Maybe we should recall the days we don't have computers and handphones.
Let's have a day without handphone and computer..!

Discovery of Flowers
HappY Valentine's Day and Also FRIENDSHIP Day..!!!
This year, it was a special week. The DnD and FoC committees have been preparing for the Valentine's day promotion. It was really a very busy week for everyone. Taking flower orders, manning booth and selling candy goodies, this is all we do this week. The most exciting thing was staying overnight and wrapped flowers. Everyone was engrossing in wrapping their flowers. The toughest job was to keep yourself awake through the night. I think it was fun. And I enjoyed the process...like I always say.
Flower wrapping is definitely required alot of skill. It is not an easy job too. From the basic de-thorning to the last part tieing the ribbon to your master piece, you will feel a sense of satistfaction. I believe alot of us do after wrapping all the flowers. Haha.
I have learnt a few more accessory flowers through wrapping of bouquets.
Forget-me-not (purple):
-is regarded as an emblem of loving remembrance, faithful love, constancy and undying hope.
Baby's Breath (white):
-Everlasting love, happiness, pure in heart
I cannot find the meaning of golden phoenix and orange phoenix. lol
I didn't sleep for 40 hours that day and a few of us too... It's so hurtful for the health. The happiest thing is that I learnt how to wrap a bouquet of flower though still not very beautiful. YesH, finally acomplished one of my aim in joining DnD. haha.

Discovery about Life
Sorry about lack of updates recently. I have been busy lately. I will try to blog at least once a week. =)
Two weeks ago, from the news on ch8, i got to know that Shin had passed away. I believe her family and friends may have a hard time. Even though I did not know her personally, she had inspired me a lot. I got to know about her story through the ch8 documentary show during November 2008. I would really like to share with u guys about her story...
Let me give a small introduction of Shin. Shin was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. She has two kids at home, one boy and one girl. She is very motivated in life and inspired a lot of people around including me. She set up a blog so that next time her children can remember what their mummy had written for them. If you read her blog, you will know the kind of spirit she had in life. I just discovered that her blog also had the documentary video that was shown during last November. Have a good look at it. :)
And this is her blog... and I hope her way of living has inspired a lot more people.

Discovery of sOlar Eclipse
When i was young, i always excited about astronomy news. Solar eclipse, Lunar eclipse, meteorite shower, planet discovery... , would alway catch my attention. I remember when I was in primary school, I made a 'pin-hole box' (forgotten what it called) to view my first solar eclipse. It's an indirect way of viewing solar eclipse. However it didn't turn out well, so I used a negative filmstrip to view it directly instead (advise not to try this). And that was the first time i saw it. It was so cool...cause the sun was setting soon.
This year in Singapore, the first solar eclipse will be on 26th Jan 2009, which means it falls on the first day of Chinese New Year! Imagine the late afternoon, the sky becomes darker... it makes me think of my fav drama "Heroes". Haha. This eclipse is an Annular Solar Eclipse of Saros 131 series. Up to 80% of the sun will be blocked by the moon. If interested, you may actually go to Singapore Science Centre Omni-threatre @ at Obseratory at 4pm (website:http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/solar-eclipse-viewing-singapore-science-centre).
The eclipse will start at 4:30 p.m.
Maximum Eclipse at 5:49 p.m.
Eclipse ends at 6:58 p.m. (which means that the sun will be setting too..! so cool!)
Solar Eclipse happens when the moon is in between the Earth and Sun. An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon. More info about solar eclipse, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse
However, some Chinese believe that watching solar eclipse will bring bad omen for the entire year. But I believe we are lucky to be in Singapore to view the solar eclipse.
Anyway a very important note, please do not view the sun directly with naked eyes. Your rod and cone cells can't take it. Unless you like this solar eclipse to be the last thing for you to see on Earth, please wear solar glasses or using some safe viewing methods to view the eclipse.

Lastly Happy Chinese New Year, Happy Holiday..!

Discovery about Mouthwash
Recently, ks sent me a link and told me about this news:
Mouthwash linked to cancer
I was like oh gosh... I have been using this product for the past years... though not every frequent. From the website, it said that mouthwash products might increase the risk of oral cancer due to the alcohol in the Mouthwash products.
I have not searched for the related journals, therefore I'm not sure how true is it. However a quick search over the net, you will easily find alot of links related to this topic. One of this link is:
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,24896583-5001021,00.html
So for the time being, it's advisable to stop using any mouthwash products. And now you have to brush your teeth cleaner...!

Discovery your Limits
This is just a short entry regarding about the sports around the year. Below is a newspaper article that someone posted it online.
It is really getting more surprising looking at how many running events are organised around the year. Are Singaporeans really getting addicted to running..? It seems that organising big running events are the next thing in town... People may start asking why people are paying so much money for running when they can run for free. Tee, goodies bag, unique route, more recognised, testing ur limits..? Perhap just for fun...

Discovery of Southern Ridges
The second day of a Year 2009 first exploration is the Southern Ridges Trail.
After some research on the internet, I discovered there's no one website that can give a very comprehensive guide on the Southern Ridges. So I recommend some of the websites which are really helpful if you are going to southern ridges for a try. There are also maps available on the website for you to download.
- Deadpoet's Cave
- Eudaemon
- National Park
Southern Ridges trail starts from West Coast Park to Harbourfront Mrt. Alternative, u may also start from Harbourfront Mrt and end at West Coast Park. The Npark website states it's a 9km stretch of trail, but we believe is definately more than that. The Southern Ridge will pass through West Coast Park, Clementi Woods, Science Park, Kent Ridge Park, Hort Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mt Faber Park.
So pls wear comfortable clothings and shoes. Caps and umbellra if u need one. Water is important pls bring plenty of it. No worry abt toilets, there will be along the way in the parks. You may bring snacks along but pls dispose it properly.
For our trail, we started from NUS Central Library, hence skipping the West Coast Park and Clementi Woods.
First of all, we had to find the way to Kent Ridge Road. We managed to find the hidden red brick stairs and eventually led us to the Kent Ridge Road. Walking along that road, we didn't manage to sight the British Military Guard Post. The good thing was we spotted the Kent Ridge Commemorative Plaque.
However, its location was NOT at Prince George's Park as stated on the map. It was at the junction of South Buona Vista Road. At this junction, you could choose to go by the Science Park Drive or South Buona Vista Road. We took the route by the South Buona Vista road which aka the "99-turns" due to the nature of the road had many turns like Initial D racing route.
We eventually reached the Kent Ridge Park. However if you wanted to have lunch before continuing, just walked a little more and u could have the famous duck rice.
At Kent Ridge Park, lookout for the tank exhibit and the memorial plaque. The park is quite quiet and have a great scenery view of the southern islands. We followed on the trail and led to the Canopy walk.
At the end of the Canopy walk, we saw this Reflection of Bukit Chandu. It is one of the tourist attraction. The admission fee into the mansion is $2. There's also the Peak Mansion nearby.
From there, proceed to the Hortpark was tricky. We actually went the wrong way, until we decided to walk back to the mansion and luckily we found the way to hortpark. It was actually right next to the canopy walk exit and was well-hidden. There also isn't any signboard to tell u where to continue.
We followed the zig-zag pathway down and reached the HortPark (Horticulture Park) which was actually part of the Floral walk. Take your time to explore this place. It was really a beautiful park which consisted of many different garden themes. Highly recommended..!
Followed the signboard led us to the Alexander Arch. Then we walked on the metal bridges through the Forest walk. If you were lucky, you might spot a durian. Till the end of the Forest walk, was the zig-zag elevated steel walkway which led to the Hilltop walk (Telok Blangah Hill Park).
We walked up to the terrace garden. This is the place where Mediacorp like to film. We also had no chance to check out the Alkaff Mansion as it was still renovating. Finally, the trail led us to one of the highlight of trail, the Henderson Wave. The scenary was really magnificent.
At the end of the bridge was the Mt Faber Park. The scenery was also as beautiful as the rest. We walked pass the Grand Jewel Box cum the Cable car station. There were signs around showing the way of Southern Ridges.
Lastly, we had reached the Marang Trail. It's nothing except many steps of stairs. So if u start from Harbourfront, u have to climb up all these stairs before u can enjoy the scenaries. Afterall, it was a great workout and exploration. Feel free to try it out. ;) Hope this will act as a simple guide.
